September 10, 2025: A United Stand for Life
On this World Suicide Prevention Day, the Psychological Society of Kenya (PSK) joins the global community in a unified stand to address the complex challenge of suicide. As the authoritative voice for psychology in Kenya, our mission is fundamentally rooted in promoting human development and well-being. Today, we reaffirm our commitment to this mission by focusing on one of the most critical aspects of mental health: saving lives.
The Power of Connection and Action
Suicide prevention is not a task for a single individual or organization—it is a collective responsibility. It requires us to leverage the science, profession, and practical applications of psychology to understand the risk factors, identify those in distress, and provide effective support.
To every Kenyan:
- Be the Observer: Look out for changes in the behavior of your loved ones, colleagues, and community members. A simple check-in can make an immense difference.
- Be the Listener: If someone is struggling, offer a compassionate, non-judgmental space. You don't need to have all the answers; sometimes, just listening is the most profound act of support.
- Be the Link: Know the available resources. If you or someone you know is in crisis, reach out to mental health professionals or trusted helplines. Help is available at the PSK.
Our Pledge for Excellence and Ethical Practice
Consistent with our vision to promote excellence and ethical practice, the PSK is dedicated to advancing the knowledge and skills necessary for effective suicide prevention across Kenya. We commit to:
- Advancing Research into the unique socio-cultural factors that influence mental health and suicidal behavior in our communities.
- Enhancing Training for psychologists, counselors, and healthcare workers to ensure they provide high-quality, evidence-based crisis intervention.
- Promoting Education to destigmatize mental health challenges and encourage help-seeking behavior from an early age.
On this day, let us all recognize the power we hold to prevent tragedy and foster a culture where psychological well-being is valued and prioritized.
Together, we can create a future free from suicide.
